Three
Generations at Work -
What Makes Gen Y's Different Than The Rest?
Thursday, October 23, 2003
Today's workplace includes three Generational
Types: Baby Boomers, Generation X's and the newest generation that is
normally referred to as Generation Y. The Generation Y's are the first
generation to not know what the workplace was like prior to E-mail and
the Internet. Now, members of all three generations find themselves
interacting day-to-day as co-workers, team members and supervisors.
The newest generation to enter the workforce
represents 79 million people and is the largest generation since the
Baby Boomer generation. It is the most diverse and technically savvy
generation in American history.
Beyond demographics, this young generation
may be the most unique generation introduced into the workforce based
on its psycho-graphic and motivational characteristics. Mark Vogel,
Executive Vice President of Osborn & Barr Communications and Director
of their Avant Marketing Group, looks at the key differentiating characteristics
of this powerful generation. Regardless if you are a Boomer, X'er or
Y'er, the dramatic contrasts of each generation tells something of ourselves
as well as how we must change our behavior to get along with the other
generations in the workplace. In addition, Vogel summarizes the purchasing
and consumption habits of the young generation and how they are affecting
marketing today and into the future as this generation increases its
purchasing power.
