Purdue University Wins Marketing Competition

A team of students from Purdue University took first place at this year’s Student Marketing Competition. The competition was held April 20-21 in Phoenix, Ariz.

“Every team participating in the marketing competition does an excellent job in developing a thorough marketing plan, a process that takes most teams the majority of the academic year to complete,” said Saundra Campbell, NAMA Careers Committee Chair. “Those teams that advanced to the finals truly did exceptional work on their projects.”

The Purdue University team had seven students involved with this year’s project to market “The Edgewood Pig Pad.” The team spent the last several months doing market research, writing the marketing plan and developing a presentation. The top six marketing teams this year were: First place, Purdue University; Second place, Michigan State University; Third place, The Ohio State University; Fourth place, University of Wisconsin - Madison; Fifth place, University of Tennessee - Knoxville; and Sixth place, Kansas State University.

Students decide on a project and develop a plan to successfully bring the product or service to the marketplace. In developing their marketing plan, students follow the same practices and principles used by today’s marketing professionals. Teams submit a written plan summary prior to the competition and then make a formal presentation of their marketing plan to a panel of judges at the competition. The judges’ panel consists of marketing and agribusiness professionals.

Overall, 30 student NAMA chapters participated in the marketing competition. The competition is part of the annual Agri-Marketing Conference & Trade Show. Over 350 student members attended the conference.

“The marketing competition is a great learning tool for these students and provides them with some really good practical experience,” said Campbell.

2006 Conference Moves to Kansas City

Because the Hyatt New Orleans will be closed through December, 2006, the decision has been made to hold the conference in Kansas City. The conference hotel will be the Hyatt Regency Crown Center - the same hotel that hosted the conference in 2004.

The conference dates will remain the same (April 18-21) and the theme will remain “Jazzed!” as jazz music “grew up” in Kansas City and shares that musical bond with the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans.

Our thoughts, concerns and prayers continue to be with those who have been affected by the hurricane disaster.

Tips for Annual Reports

Each year student NAMA chapters must submit an annual report (a.k.a. chapter book) to maintain their accreditation. These annual reports provide you an opportunity to put your chapter’s activities on display, highlighting your events and accomplishments.

Some chapters do the very minimum to maintain their accreditation while others spend much time and effort in compiling a thorough book. In either case, your goals that are to be submitted in December are the skeleton of what you plan to do for the coming year. Why not try to get something out of it by submitting a well-compiled annual report as well?

Though books are not due until March, now is the time to begin thinking about how to promote your activities in your book. In business, it’s all about results. How can you most effectively show what you have accomplished? For example, it may be more effective to set a fundraising goal for each project to have a benchmark to measure against. Evaluate your projects individually to see what you can improve for next time and document that in your chapter book. And don’t forget the pictures.

Use your chapter book as both your starting and ending point this year. Even if you don’t win the outstanding student chapter competition, you will have brought more value to your chapter. Good luck in all your endeavors this year!

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Student NAMA Chapter
by Rachel Ryder

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chapter is starting the new school year out with ambition. After being awarded Outstanding Chapter at last year’s conference, our Chapter looks forward to continuing this success by working toward the many goals already set for this year. Such goals include focusing on membership recruitment and promotions, increasing student and professional chapter involvement, and further developing the mentoring program.

Promotions are already underway. Articles about the Chapter have already appeared in such publications as The Leading Object and Cornhusker Economics, Institute and Departmental publications, respectively. They are also working with Class Acts, A&M’s College newsletter, on another publication. These articles provide insight into NAMA and highlight the events of last year.

Also new this year, the chapter is working toward building a connection with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln American Marketing Association (AMA). In this way, students from both chapters will be encouraged to learn and develop from each others’ programs.

Badger-Chicago Golf Outing a Success
by Christine Lepple

Madison, Wisc. – September 1, 2005 - UW-Madison NAMA members worked with Badger and Chicago NAMA members to coordinate a golf outing for professionals. UW-NAMA sold 16-hole sponsorships for the July 21st event at Hawk’s View Golf Club in Lake Geneva, Wisc. The Badger-Chicago NAMA golf outing raised funds to purchase prizes for the event and a portion of the funds were donated to the UW-Madison student NAMA chapter. Successful Farming sponsored the winning team plaques at $250.

The student chapter sold mulligans and chances to win football tickets to the Wisconsin-Iowa Football game. Besides purchasing prizes for hole events and plaques for the winning scramble team, the event raised $1,000 for the student chapter.

Texas A&M
by April Bonds

Texas A&M NAMA continuously faces new challenges and surpass expectations as they become acquainted with the numerous changes occurring since April.

TAMU NAMA adds to its team two new advisors, Mr. Clark Springfield and Dr. Kerry Litzenberg. Mr. Springfield, a NAMA Board of Directors member, leaves his role as the Manager of Marketing for Equine Products with Ridley, Inc. to pursue his Ph.D. in Agricultural Education at Texas A&M. Dr. Litzenberg, professor at TAMU since 1979, teaches Food and Ag Marketing. He has been repeatedly awarded for his contributions in the classroom. Both Mr. Springfield and Dr. Litzenberg bring a fresh attitude and extensive experience.

This year’s officer team plans to build upon last year’s efforts to grow and excel. The officer team, consisting of Brittany Morris, April Bonds, Clint Perdue and Jess Stinnett, plan to expand the role of NAMA by offering larger general meetings, heightening recruitment efforts, and employing its relationship with the Southwest Chapter. They will join the Southwest Chapter at Ameriquest Field for a Texas Rangers game and meeting on September 14th to solicit advice.

With the help of the new advising team, the officer team is confident in their ability of achieving their goals and blending the new face of the organization with its tradition of success.
